Mike Murphy

With more than 30 years of experience as a C-level executive, Mike leverages his transformational mindset to build new businesses, revitalize growth, create high-performing teams, design efficient operations, and design business strategies that drive growth.

Joe Rolewicz
Founder, Managing Director
Joe is a seasoned business consultant with over 25 years of experience leading complex transformation initiatives for healthcare and insurance businesses. He has served clients across the healthcare industry in a variety of consulting roles supporting senior management and boards of directors on transformation initiatives. Joe has a proven track record of implementing and scaling sustainable solutions and is relentlessly focused on ensuring client success through disciplined measurement and change management processes.

Catherine Avon
Catherine is an Operating Partner in SMAs Strategy practice. With over 20 years experience as a strategy and marketing consultant, Catherine is seasoned in guiding clients in developing innovative business models, differentiation strategies, programs and product offerings. Clients have included Fortune 500 companies, associations, nonprofits, and technology startups. She also serves as Co-Managing Director of Girls in Tech DC, the regional chapter of a global nonprofit focused on strengthening opportunities for women and girls in technology, entrepreneurship and innovation. Prior to her career in consulting, Catherine was a Senior Manager for Market Strategy at AOL for Broadband. She served as a Senior Associate at DiamondCluster International (now part of PriceWaterhouse) and as a Consultant and Financial Analyst for WheatFirst, a regional investment bank.
Joe Bourne
Joe leads SMA’s Long-Term Care consulting practice. A healthcare executive with over 30 years experience directing Operations, Service Delivery, Strategic Planning and Finance efforts across the healthcare industry, he is a frequent speaker to Long-Term Care Associations and Trade Groups. Most recently, Joe was the Senior Vice President of Managed Care and Revenue Development at Genesis HealthCare, the nation’s largest long term care provider. Prior to his executive role with Genesis, he was the President of Respiratory Health Services (RHS) in Baltimore, Maryland where he led the RHS team through a series of acquisition and expansion efforts. Before these executive roles, Joe was a Senior Manager with Ernst & Young leading their Business Analysis practice in the Baltimore-Washington market and a senior financial executive with the University of Maryland Medical Center and Sinai Hospital.
Matt Boyle
Matt is the Founder of MJMB Consulting, LLC and an Operating Partner supporting SMAs Provider and Product Management services. He is a healthcare executive with over 20 years of experience leading Financial, Operational, Provider Network and Product functions for the world’s largest healthcare services company, UnitedHealth Group (UHG). Matt worked within UHG’s services division, Optum, leading Provider Network Strategy and Process Optimization for their Behavioral Health division and as a Product leader for their Distribution Services division. Prior to supporting Optum, Matt was with UHG’s benefit division, United Healthcare, for over 15 years supporting their Medicare and Medicaid lines of business. During his tenure with UnitedHealthcare, he was a Chief Financial Officer for over 5 years supporting multiple large health plans.
Elena Lipson
Elena is the Founder of Mosaic Growth Partners and an Operating Partner in SMAs Consumer Experience and Market Insights practice. She has provided healthcare strategy, strategic and tactical planning, and change management consulting services to established and emerging organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors for more than 20 years. She has worked with hundreds of companies in the digital health and life sciences industry, supporting projects on consumer and patient engagement, telehealth, home health, caregiving, independent living and AI-driven digital therapeutics and diagnostics. Earlier in her career, Elena led AARP Services’ business development efforts and spent 10 years as a management consultant, primarily with Deloitte Consulting where she led strategy, human capital and technology engagement for federal health clients and the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions.
Marc Milanowski
Marc is the Managing Director of Annex Advisory Group and an Operating Partner in SMAs Strategy and Transformation practice. With nearly 20 years of strategy and analytical experience in the healthcare industry, Marc advises clients through a wide variety of healthcare issues impacting their growth strategy, operations, and bottom line. Earlier in his career, Marc helped build two successful healthcare consulting practices at boutique firms where he served on their respective leadership teams. Marc began his career in the Value Solutions consulting group at Arthur Andersen LLP. He is a frequent speaker at various industry trade group and professional association conferences.
Edgar Miranda
Edgar is the Founder of Auditio Advisors, LLC and an SMA Operating Partner supporting our Commercial Insurance and Employee Benefit services. He advises clients on Underwriting, Employee Benefits and Sales/Marketing strategies as well as providing coaching services to several executives in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. He focuses on troubleshooting root causes to help drive measurable results for small to mid-size companies. He brings over 25 years of executive experience from a wide range of leadership positions with the Cigna Group. In his most recent roles, he was responsible for a major turn-around of an underperforming 4-state region, focusing on Distribution, Operations and Network Contracting performance improvement. He also led a major product portfolio growth initiative that added and expanded Medicare Advantage into Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey and Delaware. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and remains active in the local Philadelphia community and charities
David Johnson
David is the CEO and Founding Principal of Sextant Media & Marketing and an SMA Operating Partner supporting our marketing and growth strategy clients. Working in multiple sectors of the healthcare industry as a strategic advisor and Chief Marketing Officer, he helps transform established companies and bring innovative startups to market, resulting in rapid growth with performance and precision. The former Chief Technology Officer of Scripps Howard and Professor of Innovation at American University’s School of Communication, he’s been an award-winning pioneer and thought leader for over 25 years. He offers a unique set of analytical skills, creative talent, and broad experience to SMA clients that solve problems and turn them into opportunities. David impacts clients by leveraging his career in journalism, advertising, communications, social media, content marketing, customer and user experience, marketing automation, customer resource management, government and public relations. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University, his Master’s Degree from Texas A&M and continued graduate education at Georgetown University.
Joan Gelrud, RN
Joan supports our clinical and quality improvement clients and is a successful healthcare executive with over 30 years of experience. Most recently she was the Chief Quality and Population Health Officer for Luminis Health, responsible for system-wide quality, safety, infection prevention, patient experience, accreditation, care management, community outreach, performance improvement, population health, value-based programs, and progressive payment models. Prior to Luminis Health, Joan was responsible for the care, treatment, and services for 12.4 million Kaiser Permanente members as the Senior Vice President of Kaiser Foundation’s Health Plan and Hospital Quality, Co-Executive Director of Kaiser Permanente’s Care Management Institute, and the Executive Director of the Improvement Institute in Oakland CA. Joan also served as Vice President of Quality, Safety & Regulatory and Chief Nurse Executive at Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic States Region and as a Vice President of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Joan is a member of the Agency for Research Healthcare and Quality’s National Advisory Committee, and as a member of the Maryland Health Care Commission. She is on the Advisory Board for an AI enabled HealthTech working to reduce the cost of physician preference items for cardiac and other procedures.
Roberta (Bert) Wachtelhausen
Bert is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of ABH Advisors and an SMA Operating Partner supporting our Sales, Marketing and Client Service optimization clients. With over 30 years of leadership experience in Underwriting, Sales and Marketing for healthplans, TPAs and health service companies, she helps large, mid-market and start-up companies increase their market share via creative distribution, product packaging and alliance strategies. In her most recent role as Founder and President of WellSpark Health, she led a national health services start-up focused on chronic disease prevention and self-management with proven ability to reduce medical costs for healthplans and employers alike. Earlier career experience included executive leadership roles in Sales, Marketing and Client Services for Connecticare, LifeCare, Averde Health, Meritain Health and Cigna. Bert is a frequent featured speaker on wellness at regional and national conferences and has recently been recognized on the Healthcare Power 50 list by the Hartford Business Journal (2021-2022), named Chief Marketing Officer of the Year by the Hartford Business Journal (2019) and named Distinguished Alumni of the Year in 2020 by University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education. She received her Bachelors Degree from the University of Connecticut and pursued graduate studies in Organizational Behavior from the University of Hartford.
